Going Green At Christmas
According to a report by Deloitte, 18% of consumers will buy “eco-friendly” gifts this Christmas. That is certainly good news. The nightly news gave us the Marines discarding toys made in China that contain high levels of lead, and it is discouraging to see.
People are getting the idea, methinks. this year I am sponsoring a Tibetan monk as my Christmas present to my family. Sounds odd, maybe, but it will be a good thing that will not need to generate paper, ribbons and a big carbon footprint when I would normally go out shopping. I will give gift cards that I make in Photoshop enclosed with a gift card to favorite merchants, and will surely please everyone. It is hard to give The Little Princess much of anything from an old man’s POV, so I am going to give her a gift card to Victoria’s Secret. Pretty young girls need nice underwear, especially when they are a princess. My son, who is an avid fisherman, will get a gift card to Cabela’s, and my Rosie a Ipod Nano so that she can have tunes at the gym. At my age, there is nothing I need, so I will be happy with the kiddies here at Christmas.
Other green gifts can be the sponsorship and subscription to a cow or goat. Nice touch, that. I am considering this for next year. I’m a vegetarian, but drink milk and eat cheese and eggs because I need the protein. My eating habits as a vegetarian leave a lot to be desired, so I have to supplement. My kids think I am nuts for not eating meat, and think I have some obsession with cute little animals. Not so. I look at the cost of raising beef or poultry to the environment, and say enough is enough. It is a little bit of my part…
Drive on,
Charlie~
