Dealing With Dog Waste

Posted by: admin on Monday, September 10th, 2007

I see it every morning from my office window - people walking their dogs, carrying plastic bags to pick up their waste. Some people don’t even bother with that, leaving dog feces on the grass borders that line the sidewalks. Although you would applaud a person for picking up feces in a plastic bag, consider this. They drop this plastic bag into a trash container on the corner. This promptly introduces fresh dog feces to the environment. Fresh dog feces contains parasites and bacteria. This will all find its way into nearby lakes and streams. Also consider that plastic bag. It takes 10 years for a plastic bag to deteriorate, adding to further environmental pollution.

A good alternative comes in two forms. There is a bag designed specifically for this purpose that is made from corn products. It will disintegrate in about the same time as an apple will.

And on the market today is a home septic tank for dog waste. It sits in a corner of the yard, and uses a digester enzyme to break down the feces. This compost is then fit to be used in a flower garden.

Peace,

Charlie~
