I read an interesting article on TH Online today. The author is concerned that we take the whole “going green” thing a bit too far and are upsetting people because of our militantism. I think there is validity to his approach. I think people find a cause, and then make it their own personal vendetta against EVERYBODY. Witness PETA, who although do a lot of good concerning prevention of cruelty to animals, goes a lot overboard in their approach, IMHO. People just have to have a cause to validate their existence, and in the process go too far in presenting that cause to others.

There is nothing wrong with having a cause. My cause in the whole environmental thing is to help educate, not drive people away. I want my granddaughters to know that I did what I could do for the environment. I want them to learn by my example, and do little things like not littering, and taking their own reusable bags when they go shopping. I want them to learn to shut a light off when they leave a room. I want them to be aware that CFL light bulbs decreases our dependence on foreign oil, yet also know that disposing of these bulbs when they blow is important, because they contain a small amount of mercury. I want them to eat healthy so that they might live longer. And I want them to carry on the cause…
I want my grandchildren and ALL children to grow up in a happy, healthy world, not one that is polluted and suffering from the effects of global warming. But I cannot, and WILL not, make it a cause that turns people off. I will not make it the topic of every conversation, starting with “did you know?” I abhor that in others, and would not myself do so.

We are the stewards of the planet. If we like living here, we should do what we can to make it hospitable. Since beginning this blog, I have learned so much about the current situation of this planet that it makes my head spin. My interest has allowed me to make a lot of necessary changes in my life, and the planet will thank me for however insignificant my share does. And I have to believe that if we all look to this in that manner, that we will one day know that there is indeed help for this great blue orb in the sky. And that, my friends, is NOT an old man’s dreams…
