It is well and good to say that you shower with your wife to save water, and take your own bags to the store when you buy groceries. Maybe if you are REALLY into ecology, you walk to the store like I do. Who knows. But to me, I think the real reason for going green should be sustainability.
Let’s face it folks. We ain’t gonna grow any more earth. In fact, we lose bits and pieces of it each year as sea coasts erode and wash away. The news is filled with fancy houses sliding into the ocean. Kinda reminds the old Coon about the Sunday School lesson about not building your house on a mountain of sand, ya know? So sustainability should be the byproduct of every industry, not just something you grow out behind the house. Sustainability, according to Wikipedia, is a “characteristic of a process or state that can be maintained at a certain level indefinitely. The term, in its environmental usage, refers to the potential longevity of vital human ecological support systems, such as the planet’s climatic system, systems of agriculture, industry, forestry, and fisheries, and human communities in general and the various systems on which they depend.” I quote.
That covers pretty much everything, doesn’t it? So, we look to industry to be leaders. The primary thing is that they should see their bottom line as including being also a good steward of the environment. Jeremy Rogers, president of North Alabama Biodiesel, says that “Sustainability to us is using products in our process that are renewable. We can grow the raw material for the fuel and raise more animals. Our goal from the beginning is to have no waste stream and use things to make a sustainable product in a sustainable way.” Nice thoughts, but more animals? Like we don’t have more than enough now?
Wish that all had this attitude. One of my biggest concerns is China, which appears to have no concern over pollution in their country. Somewhere I read that they would worry about it later, after they had reached their goal of being a world power. Methinks it may be a tad late…
Peace,
Charlie~
